The military has born the brunt of Donald Trump’s lack of concern about the health and safety of Americans. He has repeatedly claimed that COVID-19 is under control and will miraculously go away. It is one of many lies that he repeats every day.
Air Force Magazine reported that as of August 10, the Department of Defense had recorded a total of 45,000 cases with almost 1700 additional cases since July 22. Doesn’t sound like COVID-19 is going away. And who seriously doubts that the reported figures are an understatement?
Consider what happened to Captain Crozier, commander of the U.S.S. Theodore Roosevelt, who expressed concern to his superiors that his ship was experiencing a significant number of COVID-19 cases. Captain Crozier was removed. What message did that send?
If you doubt Trump’s anti-military views, consider his handling of the Intelligence report that Russia was (and may still be) paying the Taliban a bounty for killed American forces.
According to The New York Times, the intelligence finding was given to Trump and the White House’s National Security Council in February. The President’s response has been to call the charge “a hoax” and side with Putin again. A number of key Congressional leaders who were briefed on the matter disagree with Trump’s characterization. Have you heard Trump say anything publicly against such actions, or warn Russia in any way? Trump has been silent. Even his sycophant Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, was terrified for Trump to find out that he spoke to Russia’s Foreign Minister Lavrov about this topic.
But it can be argued that Trump loves the military when it suits his narrow personal agenda. Calling back West Point graduating seniors who had been sent home because of the virus so that he could give a commencement address is one example. There are many. 1000 West Pointers had to travel back to the Academy. They were required to travel at a time when travel was high risk.
They were then required to quarantine themselves for two weeks. Trump doesn’t care one iota for the health and safety of those young men and women, just like he doesn’t care about you or your family. His sole concern was to stage a PR event for himself.
